Glucose regulation is very important to maintaining an an organisms energy budget. As a student you will want to understand the negative feedback loop involving glucose regulation. (see slide show below) We finished the day by comparing and contrasting the digestive systems of different organisms.

Plant Reproduction

Todays class was spent looking at the plant reproductive life cycle. Plants undergo what is called alternation of generations, that is they have both a haploid and diploid life cycle. In bryophytes or mosses the haploid plant is the dominant version in the life cycle. In pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms the diploid is the dominant. Throughout history the reduction of the gametophyte has become greater and greater. Today we see all three four different types of plants, and we took a look at all of their reproductive cycles.

What does that muscle do?

There is no better way to learn about muscles than to actually get up and move them. In class we worked our way through the upper body and explored the location and function of different muscles found there. Absent students are encouraged to work their way through the handout that was completed in class. The worksheet can be downloaded here.

The Anatomical Time Machine

The past few days we have been working on a webquest called The Anatomical Time Machine.  We are going to travel back in time to the late 1400s when the Rennaisance is in full swing.  Learning and discovery can be found behind every door.  Leonardo da Vinci is dreaming of a flying machine, and Columbus is sailing the ocean blue in search of the Indies.  Leaps and bounds are being made in the medical field after anatomical theaters become the new fad, where hoards of people can observe simple disections of animals for a small fee.  As the middle of the next century approaches, a young man named Vesalius takes a chance with his anatomy lecture and…
