Thoughts from the desk of Dr. Buuck

University of Destruction

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, and since I posted a summary of PTF’s last speaker, it’s certainly appropriate to post one of the PTF-sponsored speaker we had this past week.

Former tennis great David Wheaton came to Faith Lutheran to speak to our high school students on Wednesday and Thursday.  He addressed Faith Lutheran parents on Wednesday night.

David’s first book, University of Destruction, was released in 2005 by Bethany House and has reached as high as #25 on Amazon. He is also the host of The Christian Worldview, a weekly nationally syndicated radio program that originates from Salem Communications’ AM 980 KKMS in Minneapolis/St. Paul and is the editor of TheChristianWorldview.com website and blog. In addition, David is a sought-after speaker to both Christian and corporate groups and is a contributing columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Mr. Wheaton’s talk to the Faith students and parents centered around his book, University of Destruction.
From the back cover of the book:  “As many as 50% of Christian students say they have lost their faith after four years in college.  For far too many students, the transition from home life to campus life is traumatic – what begins as a University of Instruction often ends up being a University of Destruction – with long lasting negative effects and no guarantee of return…Headed to college?  Already there?  Let University of Destruction show you how to be an overcomer on campus.”
Here are some of the “Very Important Principles” found at the end of each chapter in the book:
1.  Although the transition to college can be difficult and dangerous, how you think on campus will define your destiny.
2.  Purposing in your heart to be an Overcomer in college is the first step toward being one.
3.  The Pillars of Peril (Sexual Sin, Drugs/Alcohol, and The Battle for your Mind) are tempting and dangerous, but they are nothing new under the sun.
4.  To survive the Pillars of Peril in college, you must be more than a mere Professor; you must be a Possessor of a true faith in Jesus Christ.
5.  The temporary pleasures of sexual sin are not worth offending God and the enduring consequences.
6.   A Christian under the influence of drugs or alcohol is not under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
7.  Music matters – choose spiritual music over sinful music.
8.  The third PIllar of Peril is a battle for your mind.  Will you believe God and His word or your professors and their secular or religious humanism?
9.  Your game plan for victory on campus requires that you diligently improve and successfully execute the three fundamentals of a high spiritual GPA – interaction with God, interaction with your peers, and interaction with your authorities.
10.  Your commitment to interact with God on a daily basis will transform you by renewing your mind so that you can overcome the spiritual obstacles on campus; interact with your peers successfully in college by choosing mutually beneficial friends; God protects you and directs you through successful interaction with your human authorities.
11.  Compete for holiness in college.  Confess your sin when you fall.  Change your course when you get up.  Continue running the race.
Earlier in chapter 11 (from which “Very Important Principle” #11 comes), Mr. Wheaton writes “And finally, Overcomers continue running the race because they know that God has forgiven and forgotten their sin.  They don’t carry with them what God has cast away.”  You and I are also Overcomers because of that very fact.

A little encouragement goes a long way … even to the other side of the world and down under! I chanced upon the above article when sourcing an image for my young son’s school project. However, as a mother of also a teenager, Wheaton’s book and the other articles posted come as most helpful. I have no idea where Faith Lutheran H.S. is but from Oz, thanks.
